EAEA - European Association for the Education of Adults

The EAEA is an NGO working as umbrella for non formal adult education associations in Europe since 1953. At the moment there are more than 100 members from all European countries, including Iceland, Russia and Malta. It is active in policy making, information and dissemination, and various EU-funded projects.

Structure of Organisation:

One board elected biannually at the General Assembly. A president elected for a maximum of three terms. A general secretary employed by the association. A central office in Brussels, and two link offices, financed by national authorities. Regular meetings in Brussels of the board and link office personnel. General Assembly organised yearly, responsibility rotating between the members. Organisation and structure defined in the constitution.

Mission statement :


EAEA's mission is to work for the creation of a learning society.
It does this by encouraging the demand for learning by individuals, organisations and communities, and in particular by women and excluded sectors of society.
It equally seeks to improve the response of providers of learning opportunities and of local, national and transnational authorities and agencies.

Aims:

  • To promote the development of adult learning
  • To encourage co-operation in adult learning at European level
  • To lobby international bodies so that they adopt plans and policies which respond to the needs of the adult population in Europe
  • To make it easier for NGOs to work together and play an active role in the international scene
Activities:
The EAEA:
  • acts as an advocate for adult learning and for NGOs working in this field.
  • supports its members and their networks
  • develops thinking about the nature and importance of adult learning and about the ways to improving the range and quality of opportunities
  • promotes shared learning through the exchange of information, knowledge and experience among members
    organises information seminars and awareness raising activities about EU programmes and policy developments
  • organises training about sources of European funding for adult learning
  • publishes newsletters and reports
  • co-operates with other organisations in pursuit of the aims of the EAEA.

The EAEA web site and the newsletter produced by the Information Office in Helsinki give information on activities, projects, new developments in legislation, policies and programmes, conclusions from various conferences, proposals for new projects, and project partners. It is updated weekly.
