EBU - European Blind Union

The European Blind Union is a non-governmental and non profit-making European organization founded in 1984. It is one of the six regional bodies of the World Blind Union, and it is the only organization representing the interests of blind and partially-sighted people in Europe.

Structure of Organisation:

EBU has currently 44 member countries, each represented by a national delegation. Its work is directed by an Executive Board composed of eleven elected members who are accountable to a General Assembly held every four years.

Aims:
EBU’s objects, as set out in its constitution, are :
  1. to represent all blind people in Europe
  2. to promote the advancement of the interests of blind people including those with additional handicaps with the goal of achieving their equal rights as citizens and full participation in society
  3. to provide a European Forum for exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of blindness
  4. to promote the prevention and cure of blindness
  5. to strive for equal representation and participation of gender and age in its activities and in particular in the selection by national members of delegations to the general assembly, in elections to the Board and committees and in appointments to commissions, committees and working groups.
Activities:
The detailed work of EBU is carried out by 14 Standing Commissions and by Expert Working Groups, whose areas of activity reflect the major interests of EBU.
