ENAR is a coalition of about 600 European NGOs working to combat racism in all the EU member states. It is one of the major outcome of the 1997 European Year Against Racism. The secretariat is based in Brussels, and is run by a staff of five people.
Structure:
The associated groups of ENAR are organised in National Round Tables in the 15 EU member states. Representatives of these round tables constitute the board of ENAR. The bureau of the board includes a chair, two vice chairs and a treasurer. Organisations working at European level are represented by two people at the Annual European Assembly (AEA) of ENAR. Substitutes to board members also participate in the AEA. The Secretariat has five staff members - a director, a policy manager, an information officer, an administrator and a secretary.
Aims:
The goal of ENAR is to fight racism, xenophobia anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, and promote equality of treatment between EU citizens and third country nationals. ENAR is working to link local, national, regional and European initiatives to combat racism. It is also working to influence policies and policy making processes at both national and European level.
Activities:
To achieve its goals, ENAR is active in two main areas: information exchange and campaigning. It informs its associates on policy developments, budget lines and funds available from the institutions of the European Union, and it facilitates networking amongst its associated groups. ENAR also tries to influence policies and it conducts European-wide campaigns in areas including, anti-discrimination measures and their effective implementation in all the EU member states and the promotion of European citizenship for third country nationals including voting rights and free movement.
