Mental Health Europe – Santé Mentale Europe’s ( MHE-SME) vision is of a Europe where mental health and well-being is given high priority in the political spectrum and on the European health and social agenda, where (ex)users of mental health services live as full citizens with access to appropriate services and support when needed, and where meaningful participation is guaranteed at all levels of decision-making and administration. MHE’s values are based on dignity and respect, equal opportunities, freedom of choice, anti-discrimination, social inclusion, democracy and participation. MHE believes that much more can be done in the promotion of mental health and well-being and the prevention of mental disorders if we address civil society, those suffering from mental illness, their carers and families.

Structure:

Three categories of membership : full member organisations ; associate member organisations and individual members
General Assembly : only full member organisations and a number of elected individual members have a voice
Board : representatives of 12 elected full member organisations and a number of elected individual members
Officers : President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary and an Executive Member without portfolio

Aims:

Mental Health Europe - Santé Mentale Europe is a European non-governmental organisation committed to the promotion of positive mental health, the prevention of mental distress, the improvement of care, advocacy for social inclusion and the protection of human rights for (ex)users of mental health services, their families and carers.
MHE’s mission is to promote mental health and well-being of all citizens, from all minority groups and the whole of Europe.
MHE aims to make membership relevant and valuable for its members and to develop policy positions in consultation with its membership.
Activities:
  • promotes and supports its member organisations with their developments and their efforts to achieve greater acknowledgement and funding through information, exchange and consultation
  • lobbies the European institutions in order to raise the profile of mental health
  • develops recommendations for policies and strategies on mental health issues
  • initiates European projects in which member organisations can become involved
  • is a forum for exchange and information on health and social policies that are relevant to the field of mental health and well-being
  • offers a structure and support to find partner organisations for collaboration and for exchange of knowledge and expertise and to identify and disseminate good practices
  • increases awareness of mental health and mental well-being, and campaigns for important mental health issues
  • has set up committees that work on women’s issues, migration and ethnic minorities and human rights
  • organises meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences
  • publishes a newsletter and produces briefings and reports
  • provides up to date information on mental health issues on its website
