While ILGA was founded in 1978, the regionalisation process within the organisation only started in the mid-90s. ILGA-Europe was founded in Madrid in December 1996 as the first regional association of ILGA. ILGA-Europe enjoys consultative status with the Council of Europe.
Structure:
ILGA-Europe is the federation of all ILGA members in Europe. ILGA-Europe has full members (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender organisations) and associate members (businesses, individuals), today around 300. ILGA-Europe holds an annual conference that also serves as the general assembly where the executive board is elected. The executive consists of equal numbers of women and men (maximum eight persons).
Aims:
To work for the liberation of lesbians and gay men from legal, social, cultural and economic discrimination
To promote universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the elimination of all forms of discrimination and including the specific provisions of the conventions specified in the constitution of ILGA
Activities:
ILGA-Europe is taking an active and co-ordination role in promoting lesbian and gay rights within the policies of the European Union and the Council of Europe.
ILGA-Europe is lobbying the institutions of the European Union in order to gain full equality for lesbians and gays in the European Union as well as in all Member States.
ILGA-Europe is lobbying the European Commission and the Member States to fully implement Article 13 EC in accordance with the 1994 European Parliament Resolution A3-0028/94. ILGA-Europe works for the adoption of EU measures to effectively combat sexual orientation discrimination in all areas of Community competence.
ILGA-Europe is working for the equal treatment of same-sex and different-sex partners in EU law.
ILGA-Europe is working for the inclusion of gays, lesbians and their children in the concept of family. Furthermore, ILGA-Europe is working for the recognition of same-sex partnerships, the repeal of discriminatory provisions in same-sex partnership laws, the right for gays, lesbians and same-sex couple to adopt, the right to artificial insemination for lesbians, the right to joint custody for same-sex parents.
