Social Platform delivers its social reality stocktaking and calls EU leaders for prompt social action!

Today, the Social Platform has sent an open letter to EU leaders calling for social action. The letter builds upon the social reality stocktaking undertaken by social NGOs during 2007.

For Social NGOs the European Spring Summit 2008 is the last chance to build trust with EU citizens before the elections in 2009.

In its open letter, the Social Platform calls on the European Spring Summit to:

  1. Make a firm commitment that an ambitious Social Agenda will be adopted in 2008
  2. Rename the Lisbon Strategy “Growth, jobs and inclusion†and add a transversal social guideline
  3. Commit to a swift adoption of legislation to enhance protection against discrimination, improve workers’ protection, and promote the reconciliation between professional, private and family life
  4. Actively promote participatory forms of democracy at European level

The call for action builds on one year work of the Social Platform on the impact of social and demographic change on the European Social Model. Last December, the Social Platform adopted a common position in which they outline a wide range of recommendations for a human and constructive rationale for future European strategies. This common position has been submitted as contribution to the social reality stocktaking and the future Social Agenda.
