Lisbon Strategy for "growth and jobs"

The Lisbon Summit, in March 2000, set out an ambitious goal of making the Union the most dynamic, competitive, sustainable knowledge-based economy, enjoying full employment and strengthened social and economic cohesion. Social NGOs have a key role to play in assessing social progress throughout the EU, and in proposing the action necessary to achieve the Lisbon targets. A key moment each year is the Spring Summit of the EU's leaders, where economic, social, and environmental progress is assessed. The Social Platform ensures the voice of social NGOs in this ongoing process.

2009-2010 will be crucial years to change the 'Lisbon strategy': At the end of 2009, the European Commission will propose a new 'post Lisbon strategy' and Heads of States will adopt it the future 2010-2015 EU strategy during their Spring Summit in 2010.

To push for an EU that puts people and planet first, the European Environmental Bureau, the European Trade Union Confederation, Social Platform and Concord joined forces and created the Spring Alliance. The Spring Alliance is supported by organisations from all corners of civil society and beyond, including Fair Trade movement, anti-poverty and health campaigners, consumer organisations and representatives from the research community.
