Eurodiaconia: Breakfast debate – Shaping adequate social protection through the Social Pillar

27 September, 08:00-10:00 | Thon Hotel EU, Rue de la Loi 75, Brussels, Belgium

On 8 March 2016, the European Commission launched the European Pillar of Social Rights as a response to the aftermath of the financial crisis and as an update of the European social model in the light of a changing labour market.

The Pillar is meant to stimulate the reduction of poverty and social exclusion, and to support labour market access and well-functioning welfare systems, in an age of globalisation, digitalisation and decreasing job security. It represents a key initiative for stakeholders working in the social field, setting out priorities for future social action.

In the light of the ongoing consultation on the Pillar, the third edition of Eurodiaconia’s annual breakfast event will focus on the Pillar’s potential to strengthen social protection. It will bundle observations and insights from three perspectives: local, national and European. Speakers representing different political levels will be asked to outline central challenges and key gaps in current social protection systems, and to assess to what extent the current outline of the Pillar can address these challenges effectively.

The event will be hosted by Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Dennis de Jong. Participants will include:

  • Allan Larsson, Special Adviser for the Pillar
  • Maria Joao Rodrigues MEP, European Parliament author of the report on the Pillar
  • Lena Kumlin, Legal Adviser for European Affairs, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland
  • Annette von Pogrell, Diakonie Niedersachsen (TBC)
