European Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association: The state of play of LGBTI equality and human rights in Europe – What does this mean for the EU’s agenda over the next five years

26 February, 10:00-11:15 | Brussels Press Club, Rue Froissart 95, Brussels B-1000, Belgium

This event is organised to mark the launch of ILGA-Europe’s (European Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association) 2019 Annual Review of the Human Rights Situation of LGBTI People. The Annual Review is ILGA-Europe’s annual publication documenting main developments (legal, political and social) in over 50 countries, at regional and international levels, over the past calendar year. The Review is a unique report tracking key positive and negative trends in relation to LGBTI equality and human rights in Europe and Central Asia.

Traditionally published at IDAHOT in May together, this year ILGA-Europe’s launching the Review earlier to ensure its extensive wealth of information is available immediately to inform agenda-setting conversations taking place within the Commission and Council, as well as during the European elections campaign.

The panel discussion will bring together three leading LGBTI activists from the region (Micah Grzywnowicz (Sweden), Svetlana Zakharova (Russia) and Soudeh Rad (France)) and representatives from the EEAS (Dirk Lorenz, Deputy Head of Division for Eastern Partnership Countries at the European External Action Service) and DG Justice (Irena Moozova, Director of Equality and Union Citizenship at the European Commission) . The panel will discuss how NGOs and EU institutions work together over the next five years to continue advancing LGBTI equality in Europe and beyond, especially looking at key opportunities and challenges faced by LGBTI people in the region.
