Caritas Europa: European Pillar of Social Rights is proclaimed, now is the time to deliver

After his participation in the Social Summit on Jobs and Growth, Caritas Europa’s Secretary General Jorge Nuño Mayer said that “the proclamation of the European Pillar of Social Rights is the beginning of an important work for both the EU and Member States”.

Jorge Nuño Mayer, who participated in the Summit as a member of the Social Platform delegation, stressed the important chance that the Pillar brings to Europe: “The European Pillar of Social Rights is a unique opportunity to build the European project further. It is high time for national governments and the EU to put people first. We need to address inequalities between and within countries. Putting people first also means going beyond employment, people are not just workers but human beings”.

In addition, Mr Nuño Mayer mentioned that “to put people first, also means that Member States and the European Institutions should improve their cooperation with civil society organisations”.
