Encouraging Council call for better coordination between economic and social policies

There is a need for better coordination and balance between economic and fiscal policies and social policies so as to achieve sufficient growth, jobs and social cohesion. This was concluded by the ministers for employment and social affairs following their policy debate on the mid-term review of the EU 2020 Strategy at the EPSCO Council meeting on October 16. Social Platform is encouraged by this as it is in line with our messsages sent to the ministers prior to the meeting, and our recommendations on how to get the EU back on track with the social targets of the Strategy.

The lack of progress on the employment and poverty reduction targets of the Strategy, as well as growing inequalities, are considered by the social ministers as important challenges that need to be addressed through the upcoming revision of the Strategy in 2015. They are also convinced that all stakeholders must to be consulted and participate in planning social and employment policy measures.

Based on input from the different Council formations, the Italian EU presidency will present a report regarding the mid-term review to the European Council in December. In the beginning of next year, the European Commission should present its proposals for the revision taking into account the Council debates, as well as the results of the public consultation to which Social Platform also contributed.
