European Disability Forum: Disability organisations urge Council of Europe to withdraw Addition Protocol of Oviedo Convention

The European Disability Forum, together with its members European Network of (ex-) Users and Survivors of Psychiatry, Autism Europe, Inclusion Europe, Mental Health Europe, and with the International Disability Alliance sent a letter today [14 May] to the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe in which they convey their deepest concerns and opposition to the adoption of the draft Additional Protocol to the Oviedo Convention.

Any authorisation of involuntary treatment and institutionalisation of persons with disabilities constitutes a violation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The draft additional protocol continues to neglect both the letter and the spirit of the CRPD.

The open letter urges the Council of Europe and its Committee on Bioethics to withdraw the draft Additional Protocol immediately.
