ILGA-Europe welcomes the fact that the fundamental rights have been given high prominence.

Frans Timmermans (The Netherlands), First Vice-President of the European Commission, will be responsible for Rule of Law and Charter of Fundamental Rights among other things. The First Vice-President will be the right-hand of the Commission President and will act as watchdog upholding the Charter of Fundamental Rights in all of the Commission’s activities.

Věra Jourová (The Czech Republic) is appointed as a Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality) and is explicitly directed to unblock the process towards the adoption of the EU anti-discrimination directive.

Assigning a vice-president of the Commission with fundamental rights and Jean-Claude Juncker’s support for EU LGBT Roadmap are hopeful signs that the entire College of Commissioner will be committed to a collective, comprehensive and systematic approach in regards to fundamental rights of LGBTI people.

Announced today, the European Commission will be approved by the European Parliament in October 2014. ILGA-Europe calls on the Members of the European Parliament to ensure that all Commissioner’s demonstrate their clear commitment and concrete steps ensuring fundamental rights of LGBTI people during their next five years’ term.
