Progress towards better work life balance and better working conditions

Social Platform welcomes an agreement on the “Work Life Balance” and “Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions” directives reached by the EU Ministers of Employment and Social Affairs on 21 June 2018.

This is a crucial step towards meaningful implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights and a positive sign showing that Europe cares about the people, their well-being and that Europe is there to make their lives better.

Kelig Puyet, Director of Social Platform, said: “This is not a done deal: some weakened elements need to be restored and workers in most vulnerable situation need to be given full protection. The end product must be two meaningful directives that respond to the need to balance work and family life and protect all workers’ rights in the changing world of employment.”

Beside the changes in legislation, the future EU budget must help deliver the renewed commitment to a more social Europe. The future European Social Fund needs to help EU Member States deliver on people-centered policies and support the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights. To reach this objective, Social Platform urges the EU Ministers of Employment and Social Affairs to be actively involved in the EU budget negotiations.
