TGEU and ILGA-Europe: NGOs urge Finnish Prime Minister to adhere to Human Rights Standards

Social Platform members Transgender Europe and ILGA-Europe have collaborated with Amnesty International to write a joint open letter to the Prime Minister of Finland, Alexander Stubb, urging him to ensure that Finland's gender recognition legislation fully complies with international human rights standards. The gender recognition law in Finland is currently under review. To date, gender recognition procedures in Finland require sterility, a mental disorder diagnosis, dissolution of an existing marriage and are only available beyond the age of 18 years.

The letter outlines concerns that the current proposal would exclude minors from accessing legal gender recognition (LGR), which is at odds with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, according to which the best interest of the child should always be taken into account in light of their evolving capacities. The letter also supports the rights of couples to preserve their marriage when one of the spouses obtains LGR.
