The Commission promises actions against violence

In September 2011 Social Platform adopted a position paper on EU actions against all forms of bias violence. The European Commission has responded to our position paper saying “We will study carefully your position paper and take it into account in our future work, as appropriate. (—) Please rest assured that the Commission is committed to fighting against all manifestations of intolerance, including violence, by making use of all powers available under the Treaties.” Social Platform members are currently looking into how to follow-up on some of our recommendations.

Theparliament.com is reporting that Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, has responded to an oral question by the chair of the women's rights and gender equality (FEMM) committee Mikael Gustafsson about violence against women. Reding said that violence against women and girls is "a brutal manifestation of gender inequality" and is a "violation of human rights".

Many MEPs are supporting the 'One Billion Rising' campaign' advocating non-violence against women and girls and the elimination of violence against women and girls will also be the priority theme at the 57th session of the UN commission on the status of women in March.
