Further EU integration could make the EU more social and closer to citizens’ aspirations only if decisions are discussed and debated by a wide range of stakeholders, including NGOs and social partners.

But EU decisions are still being taken without the proper involvement of, and dialogue with EU citizens. For example the current process around the Europe 2020 Strategy and the economic governance is clearly suffering from a democratic deficit. The decisions are prepared and made between the European Commission and the Heads of State. There is neither social nor civil dialogue at EU level on the decisions taken in the economic governance and the Europe 2020 strategy.

We work with the EU institutions across all of our policy areas and have regular meetings with the European Commission, the European Parliament, the EU Council and other EU bodies to strengthen civil dialogue within the EU.

We meet with different EU institutions including:

European Commission:

  • Vice-President, Commissioner Almunia (Competition): on state aids
  • Vice-President, Commissioner Olli Rehn (Monetary Affairs and Euro): Economic governance
  • Vice-President, Commissioner Reding (Fundamental Rights): Anti-discrimination and maternity leave directives
  • Commissioner Barnier (internal market): annual meeting
  • Commissioner Lewandowski (Budget): Multiannual Financial Framework
  • Commissioner Andor (employment and social affairs)

European Council:

  • President of the European Council: annual meeting
  • Informal EPSCO Council meeting: structural dialogue twice a year
  • Council working group on social questions: ad hoc exchanges
  • Permanent Representations to the EU

European Parliament:

  • Bi-annual meeting with the EMPL Committee
