Water is a human right for all: help us reach 2 million signatures!

Access to clean drinking water is a universal right, especially for the poorest and most disadvantaged people. A European Citizens’ Initiative was launched last year to ask the European Union to guarantee these human rights through the promotion of water supply and sanitation as essential public services for all. Social Platform supports this campaign.

The minimum requirement to be considered as a European Citizens’ Initiative was reached in February: 1 million signatories from at least 7 EU member states.

Now we have reached about 1.290.000. Help us reach 2 million signatories by September by signing online or by downloading signature forms in your own language.

While the campaign is having success and giving a voice to the people, the Parliament is voting a directive on concessions which aim at facilitating competition and public private partnerships. Many citizens have interpreted this as a new attempt to privatise water. While strictly speaking this directive does not force municipalities to privatise water services, it will put pressure on municipalities to put concessions on the market.
