AGE Platform Europe: International Day of Older Persons: Joint MEP statement and launch of AGE campaign against ageism

To mark the 70th anniversary of the International Human Rights Day on 10th December this year, AGE is launching a 70-day campaign against ageism next 1st October, with the support of partner civil society organisations.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10th December 1948 in Paris, France. This key milestone document sets out universal individual rights a person is entitled to as a human being, regardless of his/her age, abilities, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion, property or any other status.

The United Nations have been preparing the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights since last year with a year-long campaign that they kicked-off on 10th December 2017. The objective of the campaign is to help reaffirm the enduring human rights principles and standards established by the Universal Declaration.

This celebration offers us a unique opportunity to remind that human rights do not diminish with age and denounce the negative impact of ingrained ageism on older persons’ human rights.
