Fundamental Rights Agency: European Parliament discusses EU Border Agency’s lack of a complaints mechanism

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) was invited to an in camera stakeholders meeting at the European Parliament concerning the European Ombudsman’s special report on the EU Borders Agency (Frontex) regarding the implementation of a complaints mechanism in relation to fundamental rights.

FRA was one of the stakeholders that attended the meeting in Brussels on 30 June, alongside the European and Dutch Ombudsman, Frontex and its Consultative Forum, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the European Commission and the European Investment Bank. The exchange focused on the current legal framework, current practices, and the many very concrete and applicable proposals that could be collected to assist Frontex set up an individual complaints mechanism. FRA will continue to cooperate with the European Parliament on their report and recommendations.
