Social Platform in Europolitics – about the social clause

In the Europolitics Daily on September 29 Social Platform's President was quoted in their 'Insight' article on 'EU legislation: When impact assessments miss their mark' with regards to the horizontal social clause:

'The “horizontal social clause,” enshrined in the Lisbon Treaty (Article 9), stipulates that the EU has to take into account the guarantee of adequate social protection when implementing new policies. Intensively using impact assessment is seen as one of the key instruments to ensure this. “Current policies and processes are going completely against the spirit of the horizontal social clause and are in fact worsening the breakdown of social Europe,” comments Heather Roy, president of the Social Platform. “The situation will not change if the focus stays on economic growth without taking proper account of the negative social impact of current macroeconomic policies.”
